We then prepare a detailed Inventory and Appraisal (Form DE-160/161) which is submitted to the court for approval.

Sometimes, families may not be aware of all the decedent’s assets, or crucial paperwork might be missing. In one case, I was working with a family who thought their father only had a modest savings account. After careful investigation, we discovered he had a substantial investment portfolio that they were completely unaware of. That discovery significantly changed the estate distribution and highlighted the importance of thoroughness during this stage.
Moreover, it’s important to note that probate can be a complex and time-consuming process. According to a recent report by the San Diego County Bar Association, the average probate case takes between 9 months and a year to complete.
